Algún estudioso ha dicho que el haiku es una poesía de lo ausente. En la que se ausenta el mundo, se ausentan (sobre todo) los seres humanos, y hasta el propio poeta quiere disolverse en sus sutiles percepciones. El poder de esta forma, pues, reside ante todo en lo que sugiere, en lo que recorta y suprime de la escena: por esto, podemos suponer una vez más que lo esencial de aquel día perfecto falta en estos poemas, y sin embargo nos llama a gritos desde los espacios en blanco. Un diferido antecedente de esta obra puede estar en el Oku no Hosomichi, de Matsuo Bashō: un diario de viaje escrito en prosa, y en el que se intercalan, en pasajes fundamentales, haikus y tankas. Si omitiéramos todo excepto los poemas, podríamos encontrarnos con algo bastante similar a los Haikus de la perfección del día.
