Con la publicación en 1852 de Apuntes de un cazador consolidó su fama de escritor, al tiempo que era condenado al destierro de sus propiedades por parte del gobierno con motivo de un artículo sobre Gogol, autor considerado subversivo. Siguió escribiendo relatos hasta que publicó su primera novela, Rudin (1856), en la que desarrolla por extenso su teoría de los hombres «superfluos», jóvenes intelectuales formados en la universidad e inflamados de ideas revolucionarias, incapaces, sin embargo, de operar en la sociedad.
