Candidato a ser el sucesor del maestro, se afirma (aunque es dudoso) que quedó despechado por el nepotismo de la elección de Espeusipo y marchó a Assos (Asia Menor), donde escribió su diálogo Sobre la filosofía (la «carta de Assos») y fundó un centro de estudio bajo la protección de su amigo Hermias, gobernador de Atarnea, con una de cuyas parientes, llamada Pitias, se casó.
