En la actualidad un 14% de españoles sufre diabetes, para el 2030 se estima que la tasa se incremente en un 28% en España y en un 55% en el resto del mundo según el último informe de la Federación Internacional de Diabetes en 2014, ya que al parecer se estima que un 43% está sin diagnosticar. Estas cifras suponen un coste anual al Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) de 23.000 millones de euros en costes directos e indirectos, por no hablar de que esta enfermedad causa 25.000 muertos al año en España.
