There are thousands and thousands of articles published about how writer’s block is the worst. There are even more articles on how to get over it.
However, nobody ever looks at the positive side of writer’s block.
Here are a few reasons why writer’s block can be a good thing.
- It forces you to take a step back. When you have absolutely no idea what else to write, the best thing to do is take a step back from your work and think about other things. Sometimes ideas come to distracted minds. Writer’s block forces you to take this space from your writing.
- It can lead you to inspiration. When our beloved friend forces us to take a break from our writing, we can be led to places or things of inspiration. Even if we simply watch a movie or read another book, these distractions can lead to places of inspiration. Soon enough you’ll be saying, “Thank you writer’s block, for forcing me to read that book that inspired my current work!
- It can save you from publishing a novel not worth investing time or energy into. Sometimes you have writer’s block for a reason and your work may be going nowhere because there is nowhere for it to go. Without the writer’s block forcing you to reread what you have over and over again, you may never realize that it just isn’t worth it. I’m a firm believer in never giving up on something, but if the work isn’t meant to be, you’ll know it.
- It forces you to get up and move around. Sometimes writers experience writer’s block as a result of sitting at the same desk or computer for too long. However, look at this in a positive light. Writer’s block forces you to get up and move away from the computer. The more you get your blood flowing, the more the thoughts will flow.
Absolutely, writer’s block is annoying. It stinks sometimes. Find the silver lining with writer’s block, it IS there!
